to Kitan Mastiffs on the web!
I breed typey, top quality dogs who fit the standard, are a joy to own and live with, and are healthy, loyal family members.
Located on 10 acres in Northern Missouri, Kitan Mastiffs are selectively bred and raised in our home to ensure true Mastiff temperament. We health test our dogs and provide an extensive written guarantee against genetic defects, including hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy. Our puppies are well-socialized and grow into wonderful, calm companions with natural protective ability. Mastiffs are certainly not for everyone; they're huge, they shed, they drool. If you haven't already done so, please read Mastiff FAQ.
The Mastiff is a giant breed and as such requires more specialized care then normal-sized, more popular breeds. They are sensitive and require socialization. The Mastiff is a working breed. Mastiffs are expensive to purchase, they are also expensive to maintain. Quality food is essential, we feed and recommend Purina Pro Plan. Veterinary care is always more expensive for a giant breed..
However, for those who appreciate the Mastiff's guardian qualities, unequaled loyalty, and unrivaled companionship, no other breed could ever compare.
Breeding Policy: I base my breedings on pedigree and phenotype, taking both into consideration. I believe breeding better dogs is both an art and a science, and I enjoy employing both in my program.
I don't breed to a dog simply because he is a top winner. I do my best to choose the best possible match for each individual breeding. I advocate showing in conformation and gaining a champion title, but I also know the importance and value of looking beyond titles. There are many dogs (and bitches) who are absolutely champion quality but have never been campaigned, or have been shown but not finished. The key is to know as much as possible about the individual dogs in the pedigree!
We are breeders of the true Mastiff, sometimes referred to as the “English Mastiff” or the “Old English Mastiff”. Please do not confuse us with the "American Mastiff", which is a cross between the Mastiff and the Anatolian Shepherd. The AKC recognizes Mastiffs and does not recognize the "American Mastiff". Please read the MCOA's official statement.
This website is a work in progress, and I add pictures and content frequently.
I tend to keep things informal, I take lots of pictures and enjoy posting/replacing new ones often.
